History: History under the History and Plot sections. Please ignore the anime only arcs.

Personality:

To most people Allen is a very polite well mannered young man. He’s cheerful, outgoing, and at times a bit cheeky. This is his default behavior when he meets people unless they get off to a really bad start. At which point he’ll avoid them or forgo all formalities and just fight right back with them. To everyone else he keeps a smile on his face when he thinks they are watching and tends to keep those he doesn’t know well at a distance. He may be friendly and helpful but without a lot of time they won’t get to see too much past that unless they cross a line.

The more Allen gets to know someone the more the polite facade he keeps up for strangers falls away. It takes time for him to become comfortable enough around people to start speaking with them less formally and let his cheeky side show more. He likes to tease a little and will make snarky comments, especially if it’s in retaliation to someone else being rude to either himself or another person. He can also be incredibly stubborn. The process of allowing himself to actually be himself around other people tends to be slow enough that he doesn’t even realize it is happening. However there is always a wall when it comes to sharing certain information. Even with the people he is closest to he can’t be completely honest and open about everything. He will lie about how he’s feeling if he’s down or dwelling on troubles he’s deemed as personal, which tends to be most of them. Always insisting that he’s okay, his lies are usually meant to spare other people trouble. Any information that does slip out about these subjects tends to be on accident. He tries to take the weight of the world on his own shoulders and keep his problems hidden so as not to burden anyone else. Unfortunately for him, he’s not very good at lying about it or hiding it. Once someone learns to look past the plastered on fake smiles or catches him off guard it’s easy to see right through him.

Allen is heroic, kind, and caring. He will do everything in his power to protect the people he cares for, along with those he’s never met before too. He hates to see people hurt or killed and has no qualms about throwing himself in harm’s way if it means helping someone else. Even in the case of enemies that are trying to kill him, he’d rather not have anyone die. It drives him to go to great lengths and put himself at great risk if there is even a chance he can save some of his worst enemies. Of course, he does this whether they want his help or not. This desire to protect people won’t stop him from jumping to violence when necessary, or even punching someone in the face if he’s agitated enough, but when it comes time to make a killing blow he won’t do it if it means taking a human life. That is the absolute last resort and something greater than his own well being has to be hanging in the balance. Akuma are a bit of a different story since destroying them with his anti-akuma weapon Innocence saves the suffering soul trapped inside. They are the enemies of mankind in D. Gray-man but he fights as much to save their souls as he does to protect those dear to him and the rest of the world. The one exception to this self-imposed rule to always try to save people rather than just kill them is the Millenium Earl. He’s the bad guy boss that creates the akuma and is trying to destroy humanity which, needless to say, is not acceptable behavior in Allen’s book.

In difficult situations Allen is ever the optimist. Not to say that he doesn’t have doubts or falter in his convictions occasionally. He does, but he always manages to convince himself, sometimes just for the sake of others, that the situation will turn out alright in the end. He often repeats to himself and those around him to keep moving forward, a line he heard from his adoptive father Mana.

Allen also has what is referred to as a “black” side. Often this surfaces whenever his master, General Cross, or money is concerned. Most often it’s brought on by card games that involve wagers. He can be ruthless and manipulative when playing, and since he has no luck of his own. he cheats. Taking people down in cards with these skills is a point of pride for him and he doesn’t have any shame in doing it. Being forced to pay off his masters debts has made this sort of thing important to him. He doesn’t hold back about saying what he thinks where his master is concerned, throwing out insults every chance he gets.

Items on your character at canon point:

Uniform

Communication earring - Allen can hear his comrades speaking through it and respond to them. It looks like an ear cuff.

Innocence - The unique anti-akuma weapon of the D. Gray-man universe that also happens to be Allens left arm.

Timcanpy - Tim is a golem and Allen’s near constant companion, often seen perched on his shoulder or fluttering around him. He is an intelligent artificially created creature with his own distinct personality. He doesn’t speak and in many ways could be compared to a really smart pet due to his loyal and affectionate behavior towards Allen. He does not simply follow commands though. Timcanpy is often defiant and sometimes mischievous with his own agenda. While Allen is not technically Tim’s master, the golem was entrusted to him after his previous masters presumed death and disappearance. The two have more of a mutual friendship.

Typically the golems of D. Gray-man are mechanical and used for communication between the members of the Black Order. Tim seems to have more of a personality than many of the others and doesn’t constrain to the properties a purely mechanical creation would have. Even though his appearance is metalic he moves and interacts with objects in a moldable, squishy way. It’s likely sorcery was involved in his creation, but it isn’t clearly explained. Tim has been crumbled to dust on multiple occasions and later just reformed on his own. His memory can be projected as a holographic video out of his mouth and Tim always has a sense for where his master is so long as the range is not too extreme. Even a sea away Tim can still detect the general direction of the person he is searching for. Timcanpy can fly pretty darn fast and devour pretty much anything with his large sharp teeth. Timcanpy doesn’t need to eat but has learned to and seems to enjoy consuming everything from other golems to cigarette smoke.

At the point in D. Gray-man that I’m taking Allen from Tim is about the size of a softball but he has changed size throughout the story. In further canon points under circumstances of extreme stress Tim has grown larger than the humans around him, but he didn’t maintain that size permanently. Under the same circumstances, in order to help Allen he also shot lightning-like energy out of his mouth to break a supernatural barrier. Using that sort of power isn’t common for him though.

Abilities, Strengths and Weaknesses:

Abilities:

Cursed Eye - Allen’s left eye is cursed. The pentacle scar on his forehead that trails down the left side of his face is from this. The shock of the curse also turned his hair white. Physically, his eyeball doesn’t look any different from the other one when it is inactive. When activated it turns black and red and glows. What looks like a glowing red gear monocle floats in front of it as well sometimes. His eye has evolved over the course of the story to get to this point. The power that his eye holds is that it allows him to see akuma when they are in disguise, as well as the souls that are trapped within them. Akuma are creations of the big bad of the series, the Millenium Earl. He uses them to spread despair and massacre people in his efforts to destroy humanity. He creates these monsters by tricking a person who has lost a loved one into signing a contract under the premise that he’ll bring that person back for them. Instead he pulls back the soul of that person and traps it in an akuma skeleton to power it. The akuma then kills the person that signed the contract and wears their skin as a disguise. Normally exorcists wear their uniforms like big targets to get the akuma to come to them, but Allen’s eye lets him know when they are around. The eye will activate on its own to alert him when they are in the area. Sometimes it will even activate when no akuma are around like it’s trying to drive him to seek them out. He can also use his eye to force the souls of the akuma to become visible to other people.

Innocence - Allen’s left arm is made up of a substance called Innocence. It is an ancient weapon that can be found scattered around the globe and is the most effective weapon to use against the Millenium Earl, the Noah clan (his family), and his akuma. Innocence is sentient, so the pieces choose an accommodator to wield them and adapt a form specific to that person. The forms are categorized into three types; parasitic, equipment, and crystal. Since Allen’s Innocence has become part of his body in the shape of his left arm he’s considered a parasite type. Parasitic Innocence takes a heavy toll on its accommodator due to the strain it puts on their bodies. Most can’t expect long lives even if they aren’t killed by the enemy, and it manifests in Allen in part in his appetite. He has to eat a lot to maintain the energy level he needs to keep using it. Being able to use the Innocence is what gives him the position of an exorcist within the Black Order.

Allen’s Innocence has reached it’s second evolution, which he calls the Crown Clown. When it’s in its dormant state it functions like a normal arm. It doesn’t look all the much like one since it is red with segmented clawlike fingers, but the general shape and proportions are close. To activate or invoke the Innocence Allen just has to want it to happen. The Innocence responds to his will like moving any other part of his body. Sometimes he yells it’s name anyway, but it’s not necessary. When this happens it glows green and shifts to a new shape. In it’s invoked form Crown Clown manifests as a white hooded cloak that he can use to protect himself, and his fingers becoming long sharp claws. There is a silver and gold mask that goes with the cloak for added protection, but he doesn’t always keep it over his face though. It often sits at the base of his neck, as it it’s hanging there on a string, until he needs it. The Innocence is pretty tough and can protect him from things like explosions and even giant fire snakes if need be. He can send strips of the Innocence that he calls Clown Belts out from his arm or cloak to wrap around things or restrain people. They can extend across large distances and are much stronger than they look. Once something is caught by them it generally doesn’t get away. Allen’s claws are sharp like blades and tough enough to deflect them. He can also use them to slash and send energy ripping through the air in an attack he calls Edge End.

Sword of Exorcism - Because Crown Clown isn’t ridiculous enough, Allen can grab his wrist and pull his Innocence arm off to shape it into a huge sword. This sword is only intended to destroy dark matter and kill akuma. Allen developed it in a fight with a member of the Noah clan to try and save him from what he’d become rather than kill him. The Noah were all once humans that were taken over by the memories of previous Noah, so Allen would rather try to save them than kill them. The sword cannot harm humans, passing through them like a hologram. It can destroy inanimate objects and cause a lot of collateral damage, though.

The 14th Noah - The Noah clan are the Millenium Earl’s family. When one dies, their memories take over a random human so that they can return. This way there are only ever 13 with one exception. Thirty-five years prior to the start of the story, a human called Neah became a Noah, making him the 14th. The 14th didn’t go along with the whole destroying mankind thing and decided instead to take out the other Noah and the Earl. He nearly succeeded but was defeated by the Earl in the final fight. As he was dying an older Allen of thirty-five years ago approached him and offered to carry his memories until he could return. Somehow the current Allen has completely forgotten all of this. He was also somehow turned into a small child (yes, this manga is rather convoluted at times). This means he lived another life oblivious to the presence of the 14th and grew up again. He hasn’t quite reached the physical maturity he was at in the past though. When the 14th began to surface it was just as much a shock to him as to most of his comrades. The memories are slowly eating away at him, taking him over. When the 14th is finally in complete control Allen will cease to exist. He’s fighting it, but there really isn’t much he can do. Allen sees the dark shadow of the 14th with his eerie smile floating behind him in reflections and can hear him when he speaks. Even though he’s turning the Innocence hasn’t found him to be an unfit host yet. He can still use it just like before.

The Musician/Pianist - As the host to the 14th, Allen has the ability to control the Ark. The Ark is like a pocket dimension that appears on the inside as a white Mediterranean town and on the outside as a huge cube floating in the sky. It’s used as a fast way to get around. Allen can set up gates that lead to the Ark anywhere he has been by reciting the lyrics to a song that controls it in his head. The gates correspond with a door to one of the buildings in the Ark marked with the same number. So by going through them it’s easy to move between huge distances in a matter of minutes.

Street Performer - Thanks to spending a good chunk of his early childhood either around a circus or as a street performer Allen has developed some mad skills. He’s pretty darn flexible and strong. He can juggle and balance on balls. Sometimes balls balancing on top of other balls while he’s juggling all sorts of random junk. This has nothing to do with the supernatural. It’s just a lot of hard work and training.

Card shark - The boy has some crazy awesome card cheating skills. It’s never explained how he does it. Just that through life risking practice in seedy places he’s become a master at it. He even cheats other cheaters and uses this skill to make a living when he has to.

Strengths and Weaknesses:

Many of Allen’s greatest strengths are double edged swords and also his weaknesses. His courage and kindness often get him into trouble. He can’t stand to let people suffer around him and in turn ends up suffering himself for it. He has to jump into the fray and try to help people even if that means horrendous injuries to himself. He’s too selfless. The self sacrificing martyr syndrome hurts those close to him and in a conflict can make matters worse if he doesn’t think things through because he’s upset.

The Innocence Allen relies on to fight his enemies is as much a curse as it is a help even if he doesn’t want to see it that way. Unlike some of the other exorcists at the Black Order he is glad to have it and doesn’t resent his position. Exorcists have to obey the will of the Innocence. It’s not mind control or anything like that, but to betray the Innocence is to forfeit your life. Those who betray their fellow exorcists or side with the Earl become fallen ones. The Innocence basically turns them into brain-broken hideous killing machines until they burn out and die. Being the host for the 14th means Allen has further complications. The Innocence affects him like it does the other Noah. His own sword left a huge scar down his right side while it won’t even touch a normal human.

Twigs and dead leaves creaked under Allen’s boots as he made his way through the maze of trees around him. He’d awoken in the strange forest with no one else around and not the slightest idea of how he’d gotten there. It didn’t make sense by any account. He’d stepped through the gate of the Ark to head out on a new mission and the next thing he knew he was blinking up at a canopy of leaves, flat on his back. Nothing should have been able to interrupt a gate like that. Not even the Earl had that power. He found himself wondering if not the Earl, then who had done this. It couldn’t have been a fluke. This sort of mishap had never taken place before.

None of his companions seemed to have ended up at the same place either. Of course he’d searched for them but there had been no signs of any people, let alone his friends.

Whatever lay ahead, Allen would face it, but the longer he went without finding his comrades the more it bothered him. It nagged at him more the further he went. They should have ended up in the same place. If someone had found a way to pull him to some woods out in what appeared to be the middle of nowhere then what had they done with everyone else? His thoughts were interrupted abruptly by the snap of a tree branch ahead.

Pushing his worries aside to focus on what was happening in the here and now, he stepped behind the nearest tree. He paused there, listening carefully. After hearing nothing for what felt like a long time but was actually only a couple of seconds, Allen decided to move. He quickly stepped out from behind the tree and turned right into the source of the noise. A winged golden orb smashed right into his face and sent him stumbling backwards. “T-Tim?!” Allen sputtered. He reached up to pry the teary golem off of his face. “Where have you been?”

Timcanpy stared up at Allen from his hands, cross quivering like there might be more tears on the way. Allen sighed. It was unlikely Tim would know anything if he’d have appeared as suddenly as Allen did. “Alright…At least we’re lost together now. Let’s get moving. We’ve got to figure out what’s going on.” Tim fluttered over to Allen shoulder to take up a proper perch and the two continued on their way.
